Update from Dr. Bob

here is an update from Dr. Bob Johnson's Ministry "Missions of Love." It is obviously written by someone who speaks Spanish, but I think you can figure it out...

Gentlefolk,
Our plans for the trip going in on Feb. 1st are being modified drastically and on an hourly basis. We will keep everyone updated with our plans as the date gets closer.

Following is a note from Dr. Abel Vallejos and Enrique Montenegro who are working on the ground in Port au Prince, Haiti.

Warning: This report contains graphic details about the horrific medical conditions in PAP.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: Please pray! This is a direct report from Dr. Abel Vallejos and Enrique Montenegro working on the ground in Port au Prince, Haiti.

WORSE THAN THE TSUNAMI!
Time 00:54
Wednesday, 20 January'10
Puerto Principe-HAITI

We're almost incommunicado. The team is good.

We have 7 doctors working and 8 paramedics. We are taking more than 200 injured per day.
Most amputees because of the time has come unattended, and gangrene which has been formed. All hospitals are a mess. There are corpses in the streets, people walking around and even patients in the asphalt.

We are located opposite the palace of government: it is the epicenter of ground zero. From here we see, as 80% of the buildings are lying, while others are about to fall.

The earthquake today (Wednesday) brought new people injured and hospitals muertos La are on the ground, and that some fell on him the medical equipment, or even the weight of the tents where they are served. Is total chaos! We need doctors, nurses, medicines ...
Please: Do not stop praying and giving.

People sleep on the asphalt on the streets. There are hundreds of thousands of people dumped in open fields. Although they are dead in the rubble and the streets, the smell is nauseating. We also slept in the field under a tree. It's sad ... injured children, with amputacones, bodies strewn, infected! It really is worse than living in the Tsunami!!

Our only daily food consists of water and 3 granola bars. Even the most experienced physicians like Dr. Abel Vallejos, break and cry for the pain that is here. It's so scary chaos and the situation, there are no words.

The nurse Ramon Bravo, is doing an outstanding job as the only paramedic team that makes surgery.

This is unbelievable. The emergency will last for 2 months yet, as they are millions of people who are in the streets. The city has 3 million people, there are already more than 250,000 dead and 150,000 missing. Everyone is wandering from one place to another, international help arrives ... but not enough!

"Dr. Abel Vallejos tells us that all the sick, children, toddlers, women, men and elders who serve, have trauma to the body by the pieces of masonry fell on them. The injuries are huge and have not been treated in time. The catastrophe is the ever-increasing poverty in the country.

We attend the same cases that we saw in Indonesia, a difference that is greater misery around us and thus the greater the catastrophe.

Flies abound and lay their eggs in wounds. This causes not being cleaned in time become worms, which we work even more difficult. Today we had to pull worms from their eyes even some children, apart from between the legs, arms or any injury to afford "

Of the 200,000 injured by the earthquake, tens of thousands will die of infections not treated in time. Nobody gives flooded with so much work.

It is tragic Tragic ..... .... tragic!

We meet the 3 leaders of these organizations:
* Let us love (Spain)
* YWAM (Dominican Rep.)
* Love and Grace Ministry
and decided to form a strategic alliance to work together under the name "Rescue Mission".

People are receptive to the gospel. We preach to each person we serve.
Please: keep praying, offerings, and for medical equipment that can come to support.

A greeting: Enrique Montenegro

Giving to Sonlight

It has been so encouraging to be lifted up from all parts of the world!!! From Chris and Dora in Thailand to Dave in Iraq, across the globe I have been so encouraged by the love and support you have shown to me and to Haiti. THANK YOU!

Also, thank you to so many of you that have given financially to any organization (especially Dr. Bob) helping out in Port-au-Prince. The needs are still great, and will continue to be for many years.

Many of you have asked for specific ways to help in Port-de-Paix...We have already seen many displaced refugees making their way up to the Northwest. People that have no homes, no money, no jobs, no food are relocating here and now here is a chance to help!

If you would like to donate financially to those who have come to Port-de-Paix from Port-au-Prince, or to help families who are being forced to include more people under their roof, you may donate it through Sonlight Ministries. Please know that this is not a money-maker for Sonlight. 100% of the funds given for "Earthquake Relief" will be used ONLY for this project. Please write "Earthquake Relief" on the memo line of your check and send it to:

Sonlight Ministries
P.O. Box 8031
Evansville, IN 47716

(If you have already mailed a check to Sonlight for Earthquake Relief, but did not include that on the memo line, please let me know and I will let the appropriate people know.)

Again, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for your support, your love, and most of all, your prayers! Please continue to pray for the nation of Haiti during this difficult time.

If you would like more details about how this project, please feel free to e-mail me with questions (cady.calvert@gmail.com)!

Ways to Help

hey all...i have had a million people ask about ways to help in haiti...i myself am still trying to wrap my mind around all of this, and i am not sure the BEST way to help at this point.

the most important thing you can do is pray. pray for the people who are injured. pray for the people who have lost someone. pray for the face of christ to shine throughout this dark and depressed country.

if you are interested in helping financially, i have a few options for you. obviously, organizations like the red cross, world vision, and bill clinton's foundation are all reliable and trust-worthy. they will be able to assess the needs in port-au-prince much easier than i could.

even though we were not physically affected by the earthquake, except for feeling the tremor, in the coming weeks we will be GREATLY distressed. everything in haiti comes through port-au-prince before going out to the smaller cities. this is going to greatly determine the amount of food/water/etc. that are distributed throughout the country. food prices will sky rocket, diesel and gas will be hard to come by, and many people will suffer because of it. if you are interested in donating money to help support a family in port-de-paix that i know personally, you can do that as well. this will be needed for many weeks and months to come. please contact me if this is a way you would like to help.

also, finally, i have a list of medical supplies that can be sent to a friend of ours that will be coming in to haiti in the next few weeks. here is some information on that:

Here's a list of actual supplies and meds we need immediately. Beyond
that, money in any amount will buy much needed meds in Port-au-prince

tomorrow with Vanessa Carpenter of Angel Missions Haiti to mobilize
their clinic on Rue Delmas to its maximum ability to intervene, triage
and treat the thousands of wandering wounded. But many thousands more
will be needed over the next several weeks.

I'm going down with a team of 14 and hope to carry many duffel bags of
supplies and medications in with us on Jan 31st.
